Professional Scrum Masters demonstrate knowledge and understanding of Scrum and their ability to apply it in real-world situations. The value of Professional Scrum Masters certification is intimately tied to the demonstration of knowledge needed to achieve it.
By that measure, the Professional Scrum Masters(PSM) assessments are significantly more valuable than available alternatives for Scrum. And, we strive to ensure that they remain valuable and relevant through frequent inspection and adaptation of the assessment content.
1. Subqueries can be used in conditions or, in general, anywhere where a subquery is legal in SQL. We saw two examples of subqueries in lines (3) and (6) of the “Branching Declarations”, Figure 2, for example.
2. Queries that return a single value can be used as the correct sides of assignment statements.
3. A single row selection statement is a legal statement in Professional Scrum Masters. Remember that this declaration has an INTO clause that specifies the variables in which the components of the individual returned tuple are placed. These variables can be local variables or parameters of a PSM procedure. The general form was discussed in the context of the built-in SQL under “Using Shared Variables”> “Single Row Selection Statements”.
4. We can declare and use a cursor, essentially as described in “Cursors” for embedded SQL. The declaration of the cursor, OPEN, FETCH, and CLOSE declarations are as described there, with the exception that:
(a) EXEC SQL does not appear in the statements and
(b) Variables, being local, do not use a colon prefix.
Example 1: Figure 1 shows a single row selection from “Using Shared Variables” Figure 2, redone for PSM and placed in the context of a hypothetical procedure definition. Note that since selecting a single row returns a tuple for a component, we could also get the same effect from an assignment declaration, like:
We will defer cursor usage examples until we learn the PSM loop declarations in the next section.

Become A Professional Scrum Master
It is not mandatory that you take a Scrum.org Professional Scrum training class to take one of our assessments, although it is highly recommended. We believe that certification is more than just a way to show that you attended a class and that is why Scrum.org Professional certifications are so highly regarded in the industry. Therefore, we make assessments available to anyone as a way for you to demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of the role of Scrum Master in detail. Each Scrum.org training class includes a free attempt at the corresponding assessment.
Those that pass any of the three levels of PSM assessments will receive the corresponding industry recognized certification. Search the list of existing PSM holders here or see a breakdown on how many people hold certifications.
